100 YEARS AGO-1911

The three days Elk's dedication ceremonies came to a close yesterday, when the hundreds of visiting Elks returned to their homes. The occasion was one of the greatest events in the Dalles history, fully 1,000 of the antlered herd being in attendance. Everything in connection with the dedication progressed with marked preciseness, and the various committees on arrangements deserve the highest praise for the thoroughness of their work. Nothing was overlooked and all the visitors were splendidly cared for during their stay in The Dalles. Many visitors voiced their compliments in regard to The Dalles and the manner in which the big dedication was handled.

The Portland Elks, who came here Saturday for the dedication of the new Elks home, Kidnapped Chief of Police R.R. McDonald when they started for home Sunday afternoon and took the local official to Portland with them. He returned to The Dalles at noon today, none the worse for the wear and entirely satisfied.

Although it is still legal for manufacturers to sell asbestos products today and it continues to be used in automobile brakes and some other specialized applications, houses built in the past 20 years do not include asbestos. Legacy asbestos from decades ago remains a potential hazard in older buildings. more...
